Camera Work Reflection
Camera movement project
Describe the learning process for camera work
When doing the camera movement project, I had to first learn all the camera movements and brainstorm how to incorporate it into a project regarding the theme of "surprise". When I had my ideas of what I was going to make and how I was going to use my shots, Me and my partners began to storyboard each scene on a piece of paper with detail. Lastly I was able to film my scenes which helped me to know and recognize different camera shots.
What you had to do for each project and describe the experience
For the Camera movement project, the instructions were to use the prompt surprise and also to include the following camera movements: static, pan, tilt, push in OR pull out, tracking, and one movement of your choice. The experience had both its challenges and enjoyability. It was enjoyable to film the scenes and to execute the vision that me and my group had for the project and was also a very interesting project. The project also was an effective method to teach us students about the camera movements.
Describe any challenges or successes you had doing the project
Some challenges that I faced when doing this project was creating an overall idea for how we could convey the prompt of "Surprise". Another challenge that I faced when creating the project was to use all the shots and find the order in which we could use them. Some successes that we had during the project was the successful filming of the scenes and the editing of the clips which turned out well.
Describe what you learned throughout the process of completing the project
In this project I learned how to storyboard ideas and use collaboration to brainstorm ideas which were portrayed in the project. I also was able to master the use of the camera movements, and this project helped me to learn my camera movements and use them effectively.
What you would do differently next time for the projects
Next time I do this project, I would just start writing down my ideas instead of trying to come up with the perfect idea off the bat. This would increase the speed of me creating the project
Camera Shots and Angles project
Describe the learning process for camera work
The learning process was structured around the practical accumulation and application of fundamental cinematic techniques designed to communicate narrative and emotion effectively. This approach required us to first identify and comprehend the strategic purpose of various shots before implementing them in a controlled and also narrative environment. We progressed from mastering wide-establishing shots, which are critical for providing context and spatial location, to using close-range and angle-based shots that help to manipulate the audience's psychological and emotional perspective. A core principle of the process was learning to connect the technical function of a shot (e.g., focus, angle, frame size) directly to its desired impact on the audience and the overall plot synapsis.
What you had to do for each project and describe the experience
The project, titled "Off to college," required the execution of a complete short sequence to demonstrate proficiency across a spectrum of camera techniques. The narrative followed the main character's emotional journey from arrival at his college dorm to his first interaction with a peer.
Describe any challenges or successes you had doing the project
A success was the use of the Low angle during the farewell sequence, which successfully conveyed separation and amplified the emotional weight of the scene for the viewer. Furthermore, the strategic application of Standard focus successfully communicated the main character's internal feeling of isolation by sharply defining the subject while blurring the surrounding environment. However, a primary challenge was the meticulous effort required to achieve the precise height and framing for the Point-of-view shot to accurately align the camera with the character's subjective perspective on the stairs.
Describe what you learned throughout the process of completing the project
The core lesson learned was that cinematic work is a visual language, with shot success coming from understanding the meaning and impact of each framing choice. The project demonstrated that shots such as the Establishing Shot are crucial for audience orientation, while a Low angle serves as a deliberate mechanism to communicate vulnerability and emotional distance. Ultimately, this practice confirmed that purposeful choices regarding focus and angle are necessary to translate a character's internal state and provide comprehensive context within the narrative.
What you would do differently next time for the projects
To further elevate the cinematic quality of future work, I would begin by using subtle, controlled camera movements, such as a tracking shot, to add dynamic energy and guide the viewer's focus during dialogue scenes. I would also expand angle experimentation beyond the standard low and high angles to include a Dutch Angle to visually reflect a character's internal emotional turmoil more aggressively. Finally, I would prioritize a dedicated lighting plan to complement the focus techniques, ensuring greater artistic emphasis on the subject and a more pronounced communication of thematic concepts like isolation
